Initial demos of Sonic Unleashed hinted at a return to traditional platforming roots, and the resulting full game doesn’t disappoint. There’s still some crappy 3D bits, but the 2D scenes really do feel like something from a bygone era.

What might take some getting used to is the change from speedy and exciting daytime bits to the slower night sections. Whilst it’s very enjoyable during the day, the night areas are at times very boring (it’s a bit too combat-heavy and lethargic, to be honest).
